Online Safety

I've recently watched this video regarding Tips for Online Safety and John Walsh talked about a study wherein majority of the participants actually give out their full name or personal details online. It's very alarming and I know that though a lot of people have heard about horror stories of the Internet and identity theft, some just don't learn or don't take precautions. Anyways, here are my own online safety tips

  1. Never Give Out Your Real Name - While it's cool to see your name pop up in Google, putting your real name out there can be used for identity theft. Always have an online username.
  2. Check the websites where you're giving away personal information - Check the privacy policy of websites that you're giving away your personal information to. If you're registering in forums or social networking sites, it's best to stick with tip no. 1 and not give out your real name. If you must need to give out personal information since you have be to contacted, check the privacy policy of the website to be sure that they will not give away your personal information to third parties.
  3. Get a firewall and antivirus - no matter how safe you're trying to surf the web there are always malicious hackers out there who'll try to get your personal information by getting control of your PC. It's better to stay protected with a firewall and antivirus.
